Beyond the Basics: Unlocking SOLIDWORKS' Lesser-Known Features
Jay Pinheiro, GoEngineer

Most SOLIDWORKS users rely on familiar modeling features every day, but some powerful design tools often remain underutilized. In this session, we'll take a practical look at a number of advanced features that can dramatically expand your design capabilities and help solve complex modeling challenges.

  • Texture — quickly create realistic geometric patterns
  • Freeform — enables intuitive surface manipulation
  • Deform — allows you to reshape geometry with remarkable flexibility
  • Indent — can be used for creating mating geometry and manufacturing details
  • Flex — bend, twist, taper, and stretch models without rebuilding features
  • Slicing — prepare designs for visualization, analysis, additive manufacturing, and innovative design workflows

Are you a new or aspiring CAD modeler? In this session, we'll use simple examples to navigate the SOLIDWORKS Design user interface, introduce basic sketching concepts, learn essential modeling features, and understand the design decisions behind each click. By the end of this session, you should be able to create a fully defined sketch, add and remove material, and have a better sense of what it means to develop your own design intent.

About This Meeting

Join us for our third BostonSWUG meetup at Mill Forge Makerspace in Norwood — a hands-on maker space with laser cutters, 3D printers, woodworking and metalworking tools, and a growing welding area. As always, expect free SOLIDWORKS training, networking with other local engineers, and dinner on us.

Mill Forge has hosted BostonSWUG twice before (September and December 2025), and it's become one of our favorite venues — there's nothing like talking CAD in a room full of actual fabrication equipment.
